Press Release : 4:19 pm

Castle Rock High Schoolwill be closed, and there is a high probability that Huntington Middle School will be closed on Friday, January 9, 2009.

A warning has been issued for people wandering around the Burcham Street area to not go beyond the barricades. One home was damaged on Burcham Street in Kelso from a landslide. The 400 block of Burcham and the 1000 block of North 5th were evacuated.

All evacuees are being referred to the shelter at New Life Fellowship Church, 2441 42nd Ave. in Longview.

Kalama River area has new flooding reports - Meeker Drive is still flooded; water over road by the City of Kalama fairgrounds; water up to the bank on Modrow Road. The 6700 block of Kalama River Road has a 30 feet deep by 50 feet wide chasm in the road.

City of Kalama residents are asked to conserve water. This includes avoiding washing cars, clothes and other general water conservation items over the next few days if possible.

Even though some water levels appear to be decreasing, people still need to be aware of the many hazards in the community. Please be aware that roads, infrastructure, homes and other facilities may only begin to show damage after waters recede. People should get the necessary rest and social support to stay alert to potential dangers. Information regarding road closures and other emergency information and photographs can be found on: www.co.cowlitz.wa.us/DEM/roads or on this blog.

Next press release will be issued at 8 pm.
