Longview Residents Advised to Remain Indoors

Sheltering in place is still the official recommendation regarding the chemical fire at Chinook Ventures on Industrial Way. It is best to remain indoors with doors and windows shut. As an extra precaution, you may want to turn off window air conditioning units or heat pumps. Unless specifically asked, there is no need to evacuate at this time.

Any school closures for tomorrow or too early still to determine?

Too early to say.

I would not anticipate that schools would be impacted. Sorry kids!

how will we know when it is safe to go outside?

What about my dogs? Can they go outside to take care of business?

Is this information being given to the first responders (police, etc...)? Answer: No it hasn't.

who can we call with questions? Fire Dept. has message machine and I hesitate to call 911 with a question?

Cowlitz County DEM said...

The fire officials will let the media and our office know when they determine the smoke has cleared enough to be at a safer level.

And now the acid is raining down on us.

What is your recommendation for the Port of Longview employees?

Cowlitz County DEM said...

The DEM office number is 577-3130. As for pets, the decision is up to you. If you smell a strong odor I would remain indoors. If you don't smell anything, live well outside the Longview industrial area and have no breathing issues (COPD, asthma), I think a brief (BRIEF!) jaunt outside with the dog is ok. This statement has not been evaluated by any professional, so....

Recommendation for Port Employees is to remain indoors if at all possible until further word from onscene.

Does that mean you're not a professional?

The wind had been coming in from the west at 4 mph, but is calm at the moment.

Cowlitz County DEM said...

Not an air quality professional.

Sulfuric Acid reacts with water. If there is rain, which there is, you need to stay out of the rain. I have worked around H2S and its nothing to play with. The smell was like burning plastic, and now what is in the sir, is raining down.
